Easy Homemade DIY Tassel Keychain

It’s back to school and back into the swing of things, but weekends can be long so we want to share a fun DIY project for you to do with your kiddos!. This is a great project for all ages and one of our favorites at Gathered Goods. You can find faux leather at Joanns, Michaels or if you have a Tandy Leather near you, we love them too!

You will need:

  • 8 X 12 piece of leather

  • Key ring

  • Scissors or rotary cutter, mat and guide

  • E6000 glue

  • Paint and paintbrush

This is a great project to do with all ages, you don't have to paint the leather. Be sure to keep a close eye on your kiddos when they are cutting of course!

Step 1.

Starting with a 8 x 12" piece of leather, choose your paint and make your fun design on your leather. Set aside and let dry.

Step 2.

Cut 1/4 inch off the side so now you have an 8 X 11 piece of painted leather. Set that aside, that will be your loop connecting the keychain to the leather.

Step 3.

Lay your rectangle length ways. Measure down 1/2 inch on the top and draw a line. This is where you will cut UP to. This is your stop line.

Step 4.

Begin cutting, start on the right and cut up the leather until you reach your stop line. Move over 1/4 of and inch and do the same. If you are using a rotary cutter and mat you don't have to mark this out, but if you are using scissors it is a good idea to mark your lines ahead of time.

Step 5.

Now that your tassel is cut, take the 1/4 piece you cut off in step 2. and loop it through the metal keychain. Leave it sticking up a 1/4 of an inch or so, put a dab of e6000 on the bottom and pinch it together. Pit it on the left side with more e6000 and start rolling your tassel adding more e6000 as you go.
